This evidence informed presentation will focus on the examination of a patient’s perception of pain to determine primary and/or secondary sources of pain mediation. Accurate and thorough assessment of pain will allow the therapists to select the most appropriate options for pain management to restore function and maximizing patient outcomes. The reliance of therapeutic interventions to reduce the use of opioids will be emphasized.

Mobilization to correct joint alignment in the upper extremity can be complicated and daunting. This one-hour session will demonstrate simple mobilization techniques for the shoulder, elbow and wrist and fingers. These applications will result in improved ROM and pain relief- guaranteed!

The concepts joint alignment “setting” with isometrics, taping and dynamic strengthening with be discussed and participants will leave with new skills to use immediately.

For this presentation, traumatic elbow injuries are defined as fractures and /or dislocations affecting the articulations of the elbow complex. The common conditions that may occur as a result of a traumatic elbow will be addressed including joint stiffness, nerve injury and instability. Recommendations for evidence informed therapist’s examination and treatment will be discussed and reinforced through case examples.

Session B: “Upper Extremity Neural Pathway Mobilization” Hands On Instruction Andreas Mueller, PT, CFMT

Patients presenting with UE pain often develop increased sensitivity of the neural system which can be identified using the Upper Limb tension Test (ULTT). In patients with adverse neural tension, myofascial restrictions can be palpated along the nerve pathway. This presentation will demonstrate manual soft tissue mobilization techniques to perform along the upper extremity neural pathways to improve mobility as assessed with the ULTT.

Session C: “Hand Anatomy Tutorial” Hands On Instructional Course Sherri Roberts, OTR/L, CHT

Come relax and enjoy drawing the anatomical structures of the hand. This basic to intermediate tutorial provides step by step guidance on how to draw and identify key structures in the hand. Participants will be given real time instruction and are provided a 3 – dimensional hand for practice and to take home. 65 participants only.

Session D: “MEM: A Helping Hand for Swelling Management” Instructional and Hands On Sandy Sublett, PT, DPT, OCS, CLT

Edema management is an everyday occurrence for hand therapists. Understanding the lymphatic system’s role in fluid homeostasis and interstitial protein removal is essential for effective swelling reduction. This class will give an overview of MEM, with a brief look at important lymphatic anatomy and physiology. Participants will be able to try two unique uses of tape for finger swelling and scar mobilization.
