April 2007 In January, GOTA was alerted by several members that the Georgia Board of Education was accepting public comments in regards to the definitions of OT and PT as related services in the public schools. When reviewing these changes, it was found that the definitions for both disciplines read exactly the same which prompted us to solicit input from our members as to how OT should be defined for this practice area and to prevent the potential of encroachment in the future.
With the help of Vicki Maxwell and her staff and Kellie Laird, a letter was sent to the board with our comments and suggestions. These comments were inserted into the guidelines and are currently up for public comment again before they are granted final approval. Please visit www.gadoe.org/pea to view the amendments. The rule is number 21 under definitions for related services.

All of the hard work required to make this year’s conference successful wouldn’t have been possible without the help from the GOTA Continuing Education Committee. GOTA would like to express thanks to those committee members which include Erin Brennan, Vanessa Cavalheiro, Jackie Oddo, Missy Thurlow (co-chair), Sloane Nguyen (co-chair), Susan Orloff, Debi Hinerfeld, Shahnoor Dharamsi, Shelley Margow, and Tammy Ziemba. These committee members helped throughout the year to make the conference successful. In addition to the committee members, there were numerous other volunteers that provided their time and efforts all year as well as during the conference. GOTA would like to thank each volunteer that donated their time to the conference to make this one of GOTA’s most successful and well attended conferences ever!.
