What is the difference between the Georgia Occupational Therapy Association (GOTA) and the Georgia State Board of OT? The Georgia State Board of OT is the licensing and regulating authority for OT practice in state of Georgia. The GOTA is a state member organization and does not regulate OT practice. GOTA rather advocates for OT practitioners/consumers and represents member’s and consumer’s interests.
I have called the licensure board with a specific question (for example, if a COTA can perform screenings on their own or not) and they said they will respond to me. I have not heard anything, what do I do now? The Georgia State Board of OT only answers questions in writing. All correspondence must be approved by the board members before an answer to any question can be sent. Your question is probably waiting to be reviewed at the next board meeting. Board meeting schedules are posted on the state board website.
Do I have to renew my NBCOT certification to be able to renew my Georgia license? At this time the Georgia State Board does not require you to renew your NBCOT certification to be able to renew your Georgia license. Please remember this applies to renewals only.
How do I contact the board if any question is not addressed on the website? You can write the board at Georgia State Board of OT, 237 Coliseum Drive, Macon, GA, 31217 or contact them via phone at 478-207-2440.
How do I obtain additional information about OT rules and regulations, including continuing education requirements? You can visit the Georgia State Board of OT’s website at http://www.sos.state.ga.us/plb/ot/. GOTA has a licensure liaison that represents and communicates to the board on behalf of its members. If you have a question or concern that needs to be communicated to the board, please email it to the listserv.
What if I want to take a course that is not listed as GOTA approved? How do I find out if the course I am taking meets the requirements for continuing education credit? The GOTA CEU Approval Committee will review courses for individuals or businesses for a set fee (click here for information). Individuals wanting to know if courses are appropriate without going through the GOTA Continuing Education Review Committee are referred to Section 671-3.08 of the Rules and Regulations of the Georgia State Occupational Therapy Licensing Board. You may visit their website at http://sos.georgia.gov/plb/ot/.
